5 Best Day Trips From Udaipur by Car
Udaipur is a brilliant base for exploring some of Rajasthan's grandest forts and temples, most of which sit within a comfortable day's round trip by road. Here are five of the best, with realistic drive times so you can plan your day.
1. Kumbhalgarh Fort
Roughly a 2-hour drive from Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh is famous for having the second-longest continuous wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. The fort's hilltop location gives sweeping views over the Aravalli range, and it's especially striking if you can time a visit for the evening light-and-sound show.
2. Ranakpur Jain Temples
About 2 hours from Udaipur, Ranakpur is home to an intricately carved marble Jain temple complex with over a thousand individually detailed pillars, no two exactly alike. Many travellers combine Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh in one long day, since they sit along a similar route.
3. Chittorgarh Fort
Around a 2 to 2.5-hour drive, Chittorgarh is one of the largest forts in India and steeped in Mewar history, including the legendary tales of Rani Padmini and Maharana Pratap. Give yourself several hours here — the fort complex is vast, with palaces, towers and temples spread across the hilltop.
4. Nathdwara (Shrinathji Temple)
A shorter trip at around 45 minutes to an hour from Udaipur, Nathdwara is one of the most important Krishna temples in India and a good half-day add-on if you're short on time. The temple town itself is also known for its Pichwai painting tradition.
5. Mount Abu
The furthest on this list at roughly 3 to 3.5 hours, Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill station and home to the exquisitely carved Dilwara Jain temples. It works better as an overnight trip than a single day, but a long day trip is possible if you leave early.
